So Much Building!

I swear each day when I drive around Oakland there are more and more housing units being constructed. I can’t even keep track anymore. It will be interesting to see how the market is affected as all of these units are released into inventory. Here is yet one more building going up… right next to MacArthur BART… 402 new units by 2020. Here is the story.

A Sweet Discovery in Oakland’s Temescal Neighborhood This Weekend

IMG_9777Over the past couple of years, Oakland’s Temescal Neighborhood has gotten only hotter and hotter. Not only is Temescal centrally located with a wide variety of housing, but the area is also increasingly a culinary mecca. My wife and I were in Temescal this weekend enjoying a little free time, and taking in the deliciousness that is the Bakesale Betty‘s Fried Chicken Salad. Afterwards, we still had a little time to kill, so I suggested that we walk over to Barber Shop Alley. If you have not been to Temescal recently, or have not bothered to walk around the corner of 49th street, then you are in for a surprise. Where there once was nothing but a locked gate, there are now dozens of cool shops, barbers, jewelers, coffee, etc. One sign that particularly caught our eye this weekend was a sign proclaiming the location of Doughnut Dolly. Naturally we wandered in.

Doughnut Dolly is a tiny, extremely cute little donut shop located in the first of the two Barbershop Alleys as you approach from Telegraph. The store is clean, hip, and the most imaginative doughnut store I have ever been in (and I have seen my share!). As we spoke to the owner there, another patron asked her what mix she used to make her doughnuts. She replied that she did not use a mix at all, but that all of her doughnuts were made by hand, from scratch.

Now, lest you think you can hop over and have a crispy creme style sugary doughnut, let me set you straight. Doughnut Dolly specializes in one type of doughnut only: the filled donut. Naturally all of the fillings there are made by hand from scratch as well, and in a twist I have never seen, your doughnut is filled TO ORDER… right in front of your face. In the pictures here, you can see the cones of homemade filling on the counter. The day we were there, the options were Mexican Chocolate, Naughty Cream,  strawberry and lime fillings. My wife and I ordered a half and half Mexican Chocolate and Naughty Cream to split… and it was divine. Truly worth the calories! The coffee there was equally as delicious, as was the fact that rather than 1/2 and 1/2, Doughnut Dolly serves 3/4 and 1/4!IMG_9780

We were attending a dinner party that night and were to bring dessert. Naturally we bought another 8 doughnuts to take. They were a smash hit and didn’t last more than 5 minutes on the table.

So, if you find yourself in Temescal in the near future, drop by and check out Doughnut Dolly and enjoy one of the finest doughnuts you will have ever experienced. You can follow Doughnut Dolly: Facebook.com/doughnutdolly or twitter.com/doughnutdolly.

Doughnut Dolly is located at 482B 49th Street in Oakland, CA, and the phone number there is 510.338.6738.
