Albany

Albany is located on the eastern shore of San Francisco Bay, bordering the city of Berkeley to the south and east, and the Contra Costa County cities of El Cerritoand Richmond to the north.

How Albany became Albany is an interesting story. Back in 1908, a group of women protested the City of Berkeley dumping garbage in their community. They armed themselves with shotguns and rifles and confronted the drivers of the garbage wagons. This all happened near what is now the corner of San Pablo Avenue and Buchanan Street. Needless to say, the garbage wagon drivers turned tail and went home as the women had requested

Shortly thereafter the residents of the community voted to incorporate as the City of Ocean View. Later in 1909, local voters opted to change the name of the city in order to differentiate it from the neighboring district of Berkeley which was also called Ocean View. On a vote of 38 to 6, the city was renamed Albany in honor of Albany, New York… which happened to be the birthplace of Albany’s first Mayor, Frank Roberts.
