Berkeley
Berkeley is a city located on the East shore of the San Francisco Bay. Berkeley’s neighbors to the south are the cities of Oakland and Emeryville. North of Berkeley is the city of Albany and the community of Kensington. Berkeley’s eastern limits follow the Contra Costa County boundaries, which generally follow the ridge line of the Berkeley Hills.
Often thought of as one of the most liberal cities in the United States, Berkeley has a rich and colorful history. Originally the home of the Ohlone Indians, the area later became a Spanish territory known as Rancho San Antonio. The area passed to Mexican control after the Mexican War of Independence, and subsequently became the home to the future University of California and in 1878 incorporated as the town of Berkeley.
Home of the Free Speech Movement, home of hippies and yippies, and People’s Park, Berkeley is truly a bastion of liberalness.
