Uptown

The Uptown neighborhood is situated just to the East of downtown Oakland and is a hotbed of hip bars and restaurants in recent years. Homes in Uptown are mostly comprised of condominiums and lofts, although there are a few single family homes scattered about. In the early to mid 20th century, Uptown was Oakland’s main shopping district. As a result, many buildings from that era remain, including the Capwell’s department store (now Sears and Roebuck), and the art deco I. Magnin. The Paramount Theater is located here on Broadway, as is the Fox Oakland Theatre, on Telegraph. The Fox primarily shows classic films, while the Paramount is an amazing concert venue.
