West Oakland
West Oakland is one of the oldest sections of the City. Settlement in this area began as early as the 1850s. The 1880s and 1890s saw a large increase as immigrants moved into the area from all over. The writer, Jack London, lived in West Oakland in the late 19th century and his novel, Valley of The Moon is set in West Oakland.
Today West Oakland is a mix of artists, loft dwellers, small single family homes, and warehouses. The area’s proximity to the Bay Bridge makes it a highly desirable neighborhood for those commuting to San Francisco for work.
